Asset classes explained

HowToInvest Editorial

Portfolios are built from a handful of broad building blocks called asset classes. Understanding them is the first step to understanding any example portfolio you will see here.

The main classes

Global equities are the growth engine — shares in companies around the world. Bonds are loans to governments or companies that pay interest and usually move more gently. Cash is money you can reach quickly. Real estate and alternatives add variety. And crypto, if it appears at all, is only ever a very small, optional slice.

Why mix them

Each class behaves differently, so combining them can smooth the overall ride. The right mix depends on your situation — mostly your time horizon and how comfortable you are with swings.
